About Yuk-Chiu
Yuk-Chiu started his schooling in Hong Kong with St Joseph’s Primary School (SJPS) and St Joseph’s College (SJC), before furthering his high school studies at Harrow School in the UK when he turned 13.
While in Hong Kong, he was a student in the Junior Music Program at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, double majoring in the piano under the tutelage of Mr. Kinwai Shum, a Steinway artist, and the violin, as a student of Mr. Nicholas Leung, Concert master of Hong Kong Strings Orchestra. Currently at the Harrow School as a music scholar, he is studying under Mr. Hiroaki Takenouchi, a Blüthner Artist on the piano, and Mr. Dimitar Burov, Head of Strings at Harrow School, on the violin.
Yuk–Chiu has achieved distinction on the piano LTCL diploma and achieved the violin LTCL diploma and is a Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation.
Yuk-Chiu has been active in performances and music competitions.
In Nov 2018, at the age of 11, he had the opportunity to grace the stage with Tsang-Hei Chiu, renowned music producer and composer, to perform piano four hands during the SJPS 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
He was the SJPS music ambassador to the Austria Chinese Profound Arts Festival in July 2019, and has performed as the piano and violin soloist, piano accompanist to the school choir, as well as concert master for the school orchestra in Großer Saal in Salzburg in Austria.
An active participant in the Hong Kong School Music Festival, he has garnered prizes seven years in a row, including first place in grade 8 piano solo in 2019. He has also achieved first prize in piano in the Junior Category of International Music Competition Salzburg “Grand Prize Virtuoso” in July 2019.
As a violinist, Yuk-Chiu performed the Mozart Requiem with the SJC school orchestra, conducted by Mr. Christopher Cheng in 2020.
In the same year, Yuk-Chiu performed in the Play It Forward Virtual Concert for the Lang Lang International Music Foundation.
While at Harrow School, he achieved multiple music prizes in 2021 and 2022, and continued to perform regularly as piano and violin soloists, in ensemble and in orchestra, including performances in the Royal Albert Hall. Yuk-Chiu continues to expand his music horizon, instrumentally into the pipe organ in 2022, and is an organist at the school chapel, also obtaining distinction in ABRSM Grade 8 organ.
In addition to performing, Yuk-Chiu also composes. He has won composition prizes in 2021 and 2022 at Harrow School and is a proficient with Logic Pro.
Besides music, Yuk-Chiu has a wide range of interests. He was a cub scout with the First Hong Kong Scout Group and has received the Golden Bauhinia Award by the Hong Kong Scout Association. Moreover, he has achieved the Duke of Edinburgh silver award. He has intense interest in Mathematics and computer programming, and is familiar with C and Python. Playing badminton and table tennis are his favourite pastimes.
In the summer of 2023, Yuk-Chiu had the chance to attend the Piano institute program of the Cleveland Institute of Music, followed by the Yale Young Global Scholars Program at Yale University.
